Hi! We’re Sandeep and Jill Jani. We’ve been CrossFitting at Second Wind for a little over 3 years (the best 3 years ever!). We’re both Michigan Wolverines but left the Midwest in 2008 for Atlanta for work. We got married in 2010 and then work brought us to DC in 2012. We’re both physicians. We have a 7yr old Golden Retriever named Nugget. She talks a lot, is spoiled, and has been through it all with us.

What class do you usually attend?

Jill: We both aim for the 4:30 or 5:30 classes. Once in a while we’ll invade and throw off the 9:15 class if one of us is off.

Sandeep: What she said…

Why Second Wind?

Jill: The first reason we stepped into Second Wind was the Sunday classes. We have busy schedules, and we liked that there were classes 7 days a week. Fast forward 3 years later: the people, period. My best friends are at the gym.

Sandeep: What she said…again…

What has CrossFit done for you?

Sandeep: Second Wind and CrossFit have provided a community that has really made us feel like DC is our home.  We’ve also gotten into really good shape.

Jill: Aside from being in the best shape we’ve ever been, CrossFit has introduced us to some of our best friends. I don’t know what I’d do without our gym family. Also, CrossFit has pushed me and showed me that I can do things I never thought I could.

What is your favorite lift, or movement, or workout?

Sandeep: Cleans and all the gymnastic movements.

Jill: I like all the gymnastic movements the best. Anything on the rig in particular. If I had to pick a lift, I’d say cleans or deadlifts.

Write a WOD. (editor’s note:  watch for these WODs)

Jill: 3 rounds for time:
50 DUs
40 sit ups
30 pull ups
20 push ups
10 ring dips
run 800m

Sandeep: 3 rounds for time:
     Run 400m
20 box jumps
20 push ups
20 sit ups
20 wall balls
40 DUs
5 muscle ups

What exercise makes you want to turn around and head home?

Jill: Wall balls. Period. Also, if I have to run before or after wall balls, I’m a real goner. Oh, and if you add snatch to wall balls and running, then I’ll just cry.

Sandeep: Burpees and overhead squats

What do you do when youʼre not doing CrossFit?

Jill: Work. Boo. I also really enjoy doing crafts. We just bought our first home, too, and are pretty busy doing things around the house.

Sandeep: Work. A lot. We also watch a bunch of movies and make our Blue Apron dinners 3x/wk. Nugget gets to go to the dog park a lot, too.

Whatʼs your favorite movie of all time? or… What book did you just read?

Sandeep: I just finished reading “Good to Great”. It was pretty awesome.

Jill: “13 Going on 30.” BEST MOVIE EVER!!! To read, I just downloaded Stephen King’s “IT” and Shirley Jackson’s “The Haunting of Hill House” to get me in the Halloween spirit.

Whatʼs your favorite song to WOD to? Or… what song should be added to our playlist?

Jill: Anything by Pittbull.

Sandeep: “Do It” – Pittbull, “Just Like Heaven” – The Cure, “S.O.B.” – Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, “Starlight” – Muse, “Living Loving Maid” – Led Zeppelin, “Popular Song” – Mika, “R U Mine?” – Arctic Monkeys. Should I just create a playlist? (yes, please)

What would people be surprised to learn about you:

Jill: I LOVE scary movies and scary stories (we’ve been on every “haunted this or that” walking tour in the area). Also, during high school, I wanted to be an NHL sports commentator.

Sandeep: I don’t like scary movies.

Whatʼs your biggest accomplishment in the gym?

Jill: There’s not one single biggest accomplishment for me: it’s everything I’ve done from day #1. Practice makes perfect, and I’m really happy where my time at the gym has gotten me. With that said, I do have a specific goal in mind right now, and it’s my first muscle up.

Sandeep: There are so many. My first MU is a recent one. But, really, it’s the moments outside the gym that make me realize why CrossFit is so important. The times when I had to move heavy furniture and it wasn’t that hard (‘cause Jill helped) or when I had to get up 8 flights of stairs and I wasn’t that tired or when I went to the suit store and they suggested the “athletic cut”. Those are the small moments that I end up being the most proud of and that make the pain of the gym worth it.

Jill: Oh, another thing! We like to weigh our dog at home occasionally by picking her up and stepping on the scale ourselves. Picking up a 70lb + dog is A LOT easier with good form 😉
